Number portability refers to the ability of a user to transfer its telephone service from one company to a new phone company (fixed line or mobile) while keeping its current telephone number.

In 2008, the Chilean Government's Subsecretary of Telecommunications called for a consulting service to select the best model for phone number portability in Chile.

NIC Labs considered important to share its experience in Telephony and Internet convergence, and partnered with other expert organisms to present a proposal. The partners are: Sixbell Nekotec Solutions (http://www.sixbell.cl), a consortium expert in System Integration for the telecommunication sector; and Regulación y Mercados, a consulting company specialized in telecommunication regulations.

The number portability proposal, given the experience of the entire team, was selected, being the proposal with the best technical evaluation.

Among others, the proposal considers successful implementations around the globe, minimizes the technical and economical impacts, is based on a centralized data model, uses replication inside the systems at every telecommunication player, and applies a request model for each call where the communication is made (All Call Query solution).
