Internet and the Earthquake

We have created this wiki with the simple idea to share some objective data about the state and behavior of the Chilean Internet during the earthquake of 27-February on 2010. We keep studying the phenomena to add more info about we get more results and data.

As a preliminar result, our data shows that Internet had a massive failure after the earthquake: between 4:00am and 11:30am of the 27-February was the major impact, but we had failures and instabilities until 28-February. This failure is all but not normal. Internet has redundant links and the routing protocol should have survive to the partial shortage of the Chilean Internet. We don't know the main reason of the massive failure (preliminary we speak about a 64% of the chilean internet unreachable from outside), but we are researching to get a good hypothesis of what happened that day.

The main motivation of the wiki:

• To study and important failure that should have never happened.
• Use the information to spread out the ideas and make us sure that this will not happen in the future.
• Spread to society the critical importance that Internet has today as infrastructure. Show to the public that the Chilean Internet is not at the level we need.

• Create and open and public space to share the analysis about the Internet behavior during the quake
• Get evidence and data to show the behavior of internet the week of the quake
• Discuss and create conscience of the importance of this problems
• Create a workgroup to study and design solutions to avoid events like this happen in the future
